The First Official Trailer of Pixar’s Coco is Out!

Pixar’s new movie, Coco is being described as a love letter to Mexico

It’s finally here! Disney Pixar released the first official trailer of their upcoming movie Coco today. It is slated to release this winter and is the next project in line post Cars 3. The movie is the only non-sequel on the studio’s slate right now.

The story revolves around a 12 year old Mexican boy, Miguel who’s love for music is challenged by his family’s age old ban on Music. As the story goes, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife in favor of a career in music. After she took over as the matriarch of the shoe-making family, she banned music for all her descendants. This led his family to believe that music is cursed.

Coco is directed by Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and it’s cast includes; Gael García Bernal of Mozart in the Jungle fame, new comer Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt from Law & Order and Renée Victor from Weeds as Miguel’s abuelita/ grandmother.

Director Lee Unkrich was inspired by Día de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead to create this movie. In several interviews, Unkrich has stressed that it was important for them to have an all Latino cast from day one to preserve authenticity and portray Mexican culture in the best manner possible.

While Pixar has confirmed that Coco isn’t a musical, there will definitely be some original scores to look forward to!

Without much ado, here’s the official plot of Coco –

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

Going by the first look of the movie, Coco looks like a homage to classic Mexican ranchera films that featured several staples of the genre, including Vicente Fernandez and Antonio Aguilar. And then there’s the magical element which makes this a truly awaited Pixar Movie!
